This winter has been horrendous for our family when it comes to sickness, with myself or other family members being unwell for a large portion of it. While I've got some games in, I've missed a lot of gaming opportunities and haven't been able to hold games like I'd wanted to. I have acquired some new games. My friend Israel sold me his copy of a game I've wanted to own for ages, Airlines Europe for a fantastic price. I bought Dead Man's Draw because I wanted a quick and light press-your-luck game that I could play with the kids or use as a short filler. It's always a blast to play. Zac particularly likes it. Games with luck are great for kids, and games that make luck actually fun are ideal for families. Our family went to Wellington for a week over the school holidays and I popped into Cerberus Games with a mission to buy a game. A copy of Above and Below caught my eye - I just love the artwork and the concept of the game. The reviews weren't stellar so my expectations were pretty low, but it turns out it 's a great game! Finally, Brad has been pushing for me to get Pandemic: Legacy. Yes, you heard right - I said Brad! This is a campaign version of Pandemic that comes with stickers, secret compartments, secret card decks and you never know what you're going to get as you play - which is pretty exciting. I'm not a huge fan of the original Pandemic, but Legacy shot to first place in the BGG rankings when it came out and has stayed there for a year. That's an impressive feat. Brad, Devon and myself are playing it and I invited my friend Angela to join us for our campaign. The down side is this game is one-use only. You play from January to December and you get two chances to try and beat it (it's a co-operative game) for each month. And that's it. Forever. But so worth it! I also bought a set of 24-carat gold-plated regular playing cards because - well, bling. They were really cheap (demo copy) so I had to. You understand, right? Some gaming moments from the last couple of months: Games I Played in JuneTakenoko (x3) Puerto Rico (x2) Exploding Kittens HeroQuest Railways of the World Unexploded Cow Most enjoyed: Puerto Rico Why? This game is a classic for a reason. Not too long, meaningful decisions, getting to build something of your own. Least enjoyed: Exploding Kittens Why? Sure, the cards are funny when you read them, but there really isn't much to this game. Games I Played in July Dead Man's Draw (x3)
Above and Below (x2) Arcadia Quest (x2) 7 Wonders Legendary: A Marvel Deckbuilding Game Lords of Waterdeep (with Scoundrels of Skullport expansion) Mysterium Most enjoyed: Above and Below Why? Beautiful artwork, enjoyable gameplay and excitement when you explore the caverns. I was pleasantly surprised by this game! Least enjoyed: Legendary Why? I'm a bit sick of Marvel Legendary because it's the one that both Brad and Devon request if I can convince them to play a game with me. Also, it has a massive set-up and put-away time.
